Last Tuesday, I interviewed Jack Maeby, author of The Thorazine Mirrorball for our first inaugural podcast. As we will be at the Venice Abbot Kinney Memorial Library on Saturday, April 5, 2008, from 3 to 5 pm with two other authors, I thought it was timely. Jeff Sherratt and Deborah Grabien will be joining us to discuss large, conglomerate publishers vs. independent presses. Considering all that has been going down with Amazon lately, this could potentially be a very interesting discussion.So, tensions could be running high on Saturday. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Culver City speaking engagement

As many of you know, yesterday, I spoke at a local library about ebooks. Well, the topic was officially "Romancing the eBook" with the main focus being on romance and erotica ebooks. The audience was attentive and very interested in what I had to say. I expected the engagement to last thirty to forty-five minutes, but the interest was so high that I spoke for a good hour and a half. The topics ranged from ebooks to questions on publishing, getting published. Toward the end, the librarian asked us to read excerpts. One of our Wild Child authors, Jack Maeby, read an excerpt from his book The Thorazine Mirrorball. After his reading, I picked up one of our print books, Conspiracy of Angels, and read a brief excerpt as well. Jack's appearance surprised and delighted me. I am glad he was able to make it. He and I along with his friend Hannah, an author with Berkley, will be speaking at the Venice-Abbot Kinney Library on April 5 at 3 pm about independent publishing as opposed to NY publishing. It promises to be a lively discussion. Mark your calendars. I expect anywhere from 40-50 people to attend. The link will give you hours and location, but I will post more about this event the closer we get to it.

At the end of my gig, the librarian took ten sample CDs and will be giving them to her reading group. She also wants to see our print titles included in the library catalog. Overall, a very successful engagement.

Of course, not everything went as planned. Well, that's typical, or so it seems. Due to some server problems, I was unable to post the new free reads up on Freya's Bower before the speaking engagement. However, as both were sweet, I posted them on Wild Child Publishing's site. I also uploaded a free Wild Child read, a horror/fantasy short. I'll be moving the sweet romance free reads to Freya's Bower on Tuesday. I also had problems logging onto the library's wi-fi because, apparently, I no longer had the ability to access it through my library card. I know that I did since my last speaking engagement required me to sign in, but we had to set that up again. As I said, typical.

I am pleased with the outcome and look forward to more such engagements in the future. I would like to thank Jessica Henderson, the librarian, for giving me this opportunity.

Book Signing, Book Trailer and New Print Books

Dan Russell, a Wild Child Publishing author, just released his first book trailer. His novella, Shutterbug, is a psychological thriller. You can also find his word in our horror anthology Decimate.

Wild Child Publishing has two new print books available: Weirdly: A Collection of Strange Tales and The Thorazine Mirrorball.

This afternoon I attended my first WCP book signing. As most of my authors live too far away for me to do this, I nearly burst with excitement to attend. Read Books and New Magazines, an independently owned bookstore in Los Angeles, hosted the occasion. Warm and friendly, the owners Jeremy and Deborah made everyone feel welcome. If they were located closer to where I live – Eagle Rock is over 20 miles away – I would patronize them. (Any of you Los Angelenos know what twenty miles means here, especially when you are looking at the 10, 110 and 5 freeways.) However, I encourage everyone in that area to look them up. Not only will you find some signed copies of The Thorazine Mirrorball still available -- you better hurry as I have a feeling they won’t last – but toddler readings on Saturday and other great books, magazines, and events. While they are primarily a used book dealer, they obviously carry local authors.

Needless to say, the book signing was a resounding success. Jack invited everyone back to his house for food, good company, another reading – this time by an actor – and jazz. Yes, Jack, with a few of his friends, played live jazz for his guests. As the actor read the excerpt, Jack and his friends accompanied him. I tell you, there’s nothing like listening to a well-written piece of literature with live music to enhance it.
Alas, I had to cut my visit short as my toddler and husband waiting for me at home…very impatiently, I might add.

Thank you, Jack, for allowing me to live vicariously through you. (smile)

Jack will be signing more books at another location. I will keep you posted.

One of our editors, K.M. Frontain, wrote this. It is so wonderfult that I had to share it. :)

1. I'm not here to be your fan, but I will be your first fan the day your story is published. I am here to see the flaws in your submitted work. It's my job. Author, try to understand this when you get back your first revision, your second, or any of them. Flaws hurt and create upset, but it's not about hurting and upsetting you. It's about fixing a story. If I'm honest, if I'm any good at my job, you're going to hear about the flaws in your story. There's no getting around this.I'll try saying things as politely as I can, but I must say the truth. Author, try to remember blunt does not mean I want to hurt your feelings. Blunt merely means I'm working as hard as I can while being honest about what I see. I will not waste time writing advice full of apologies for doing so. Expect honesty from me. Expect directness. I do not go out of my way to attack you, the human being, when I make a request, say a character isn't sympathetic, give you a suggestion, tell you more than once to fix the same flaw. This is about getting a story edited and that is all.

2. My tools of the trade are words and grammar. Definitions, usage, punctuation, POV. I require knowledge of all these things and a skill for seeing the difference between a style choice and bad writing. Author: I will do my best to explain why something is bad writing. Please listen. I'm not here to change your style, but if I point something out, calmly look at your manuscript again and check for what I discussed. What if I'm right? You're the one who must live with the end results of your revisions. The editing process, a real editing process, can result in growth for an author. Try to welcome it.

3. Author, your tools of the trade are words and grammar. Definitions, usage, punctuation, POV. I expect you to use these properly. If I discover you require relearning the rules for any of them, I'm going to say so. I will insist that you learn to use them properly. Only when you truly understand the rules can you work the tools of your trade in a manner that defies the rules. When you reach that point, I will smile as I read your work, because I will admire that you arrived at that pinnacle.

4. Revision work is not my work. It's the author's. My work is looking for flaws. Flaws are misuse of the tools of the trade, misleading or unclear writing, mistakes in the plot, characters that aren't believable, poor story flow. Once I find these and point them out to the author, the author is the one that must do the work of patching, covering up, weeding, replacing. If I do the revisions for the author, it's unfair to me. It's unfair to the author. It's unfair to every other author waiting for me to spend time on their story.It's not my story. Author, the story belongs to you. Take pride in being professional and do your revisions. Don't expect me to fix the story for you.

5. Editing isn't about my vision of a story. It's about the author's. Author, remember that when I make suggestions, they are suggestions. The story is yours. The characters are yours. Tell me how you see your characters and your story, and I'll do my best to help you meet your vision.

6. Editing is about teamwork. I am a human being. I am like you. I make mistakes. I don't know everything. I miss things. I sometimes need things pointed out. Author, I won't take offence if you teach me something new, offer me a different way to view an idea, send me a link that shows you did your homework, or highlight a paragraph I may have missed that backs up the plot twist a few pages later in your story. Teamwork is about listening to each other. I listen.

7. I have a standard to live by as well. So does my publishing house. Author, remember that when you decide you disagree with my advice. People will know who edited your story, and if it leaves my hands in bad shape, shame on me. And that's why I'll insist on logic when we discuss fixes. Logic trumps opinion. I'll insist you explain your reasons so I can understand them, but if those reasons don't make sense, I'm going to say so.Author, if you have a good reason, I'll see it and agree. Author, if you don't have a good reason, I'll keep showing you why it isn't good. If we come to an impasse, I can consult other editors belonging to my publishing house. If they agree with you, I don't mind.Remember: I'm a human being. I don't expect to be perfect, but I do expect you to treat me fairly and to remember we are discussing a point about a story, not arguing to hurt each other personally.Author, I will do my utmost to be fair to your perspective. I promise. But I won't lower my standards. Expect to work and work hard. I want to see a story published that we can both be proud of.

Are you superstitious?

If Friday the 13th is so bad, then why was last Friday worse? (Knock on wood.) LOL

Seriously, last Friday was a nightmare for me. The old Murphy's Law seemed to have taken up residence in my life and touched every aspect of it. I was more stressed than a chair with a 40 ton truck on it. Somehow, I managed to survive without a heart attack. And thank goodness for that or I wouldn't have experienced these last two days of awesome news.

As many of you know, if you've read this Gather article, one of our titles, Fade To Pale by James Cheetham, was picked up by the biggest Canadian book chain McNally & Rand. Not only that, they bought twelve copies, with eight pre-sold. A huge coup for us as a relatively new, small press. (This title will be available on Amazon in a few weeks.) Mr. Cheetham has also had Fade To Pale mentioned on three radio stations (one was an interview) and a newspaper article interviewing him (Selkirk Journal in Canada).

Then today, I put in a call to an ex boss. I worked for two years at my hometown library as the senior librarian assistant while I got my masters degree at the local university. I have stayed friends with my ex boss, and, when we published Pervalism in print (available at Amazon as well as at Wild Child Publishing), I donated a copy to my hometown library. (This was back in December 2006.) I called because I had checked the online catalog system last Friday, and the title still wasn't there. My ex boss, Barbara, told me that she really didn't know what had happened to it. Perhaps they'd lost the book in processing.

Hm...well, you can imagine my response. She wondered if I wanted to donate another copy. Since I was originally from there, the book would have a better chance of passing through the library committee.

Now, people, I ask you, would you donate another copy if it could possibly get lost in the shuffle again? No, it's not a great deal of money for one book, but as a small press, every cent counts.

Barbara agreed to talk to the manager of the adult services department at the downtown library to see what happened to the book. As the last time took a while, I didn't imagine she had an answer on the issue, but I called her about something else entirely. Imagine my delight to hear that the manager decided to just purchase a copy for my hometown library, but not just one copy of Pervalism. The library system bought THREE copies! One for my old library, one for the main library, and one for the book mobile.

For some of you, you might be saying, "What's the big deal?"

Honey, breaking into the library systems is a big deal. It's the exposure, the possibility of getting some local newspapers to run stories on our little publishing company, and getting our books out there. It also makes it possible for me to approach my local library again, Culver City branch, which is part of the Los Angeles County Library system, to see if they will carry not just Pervalism, but Fade To Pale, Iron Horse Rider, Conspiracy of Angels, and Dreams & Desires: A Romance and Erotica Anthology. See, I can say that the Fresno County Library system has ordered three copies of Pervalism. It was approved by that system, surely it would be okay for ours.

And now that we have one title in that system, the possibility of us getting more in is much, much higher. You can bet I will be in contact with the manager of adult services for Fresno County Library to see if they would be interested in any of our other titles.

Not only that, because of this, my hometown newspaper has agreed to do a feature article on the local girl who did good. (grin)

Selling "used" ebooks

I am on a number of books discussing ebooks. Just last night, one of my lists alerted me to a couple of Word Press blogs that are selling “used” ebooks.

For those of you out there that don’t know, selling a copy of an ebook that you bought is illegal, as is buying a “used” ebook. It is copyright infringement. Buying an ebook does not give a person the right to sell it, give it away, or copy it. When a person does this, they not only break the law, but they hurt the author, the publisher, and readers. How it hurts the author and publisher is obvious, but what about the reader? Think about it, if the author is not making enough royalties from his/her books, she will not be able to write as many or may have to give up writing all together. And a number of publishers have closed their doors from people illegally sharing the ebooks they published. There are many talented authors out there who struggle, in part, because of this type of activity.

If you no longer want that ebook sitting on your PDA or computer, the best, and only legal way to get rid of it, is to delete it. If you wish to give someone an ebook you enjoyed, buy an extra copy and give it to them that way. Yes, it seems silly, but you will know you are supporting that author, allowing them to continue to write great tales that will amuse you for years to come.

So, I sent the ARC for the charity anthology off to Romantic Times (RT) in hopes they would review it for the March issue. The contact for RT said that she didn't know if it would happen, but if I sent them a blurb for the book, perhaps that could go in. Of course, a review would be optimal, but I'll take a blurb if that's all they will give us. Still, I am pleased. I also sent out an ARC electronically to several online review sites. A number of them have been very supportive and have sent the book to a reviewer already. (I sent it out last night. That's a quick response.)

I am very appreciative at how supportive everyone is being. I know this is an important charity. I truly believe that when we band together, we can make a difference.

On Barnes & Noble

As many of you know, Freya's Bower will be releasing its first charity anthology on February 1, 2007 to benefit a battered woman's shelter in Florida. We had an overwhelming turnout for the anthology (18 authors), for which we are truly grateful. The anthology is now some 85,000 words in stories. For the entire list of authors who donated stories, see the right side bar. There are links to their websites.

Although it is not officially released, Barnes & Noble already has it listed on their site in both paperback and hard cover form. We will be offering it in print and ebook format at Freya's Bower. It will be available for purchase through FB on February 1st. Advance sales will be taken come December 15th.

Most of the stories are sweet romance, although we do have a few tangy, spicy, and sizzling.

In other news, Pervalism is now listed at Barnes & Noble in print form. Of course, you can still buy it through Wild Child Publishing in either its ebook or print format.

We are primed to take over the world. Muhahahaha! LOL Uh, yeah. Right.

Within a matter of days, Freya's Bower will be releasing several Bites, short ebooks ranging between 6K and 8K. I haven't been around for quite some time. This is mainly due to being busy and battling cockroaches. Yes, we still have them. (sigh) Just recently, I had to clean out all of my cupboards and closets. The house is still a mess and will be until the weekend. I am slowly putting things away, but between my toddler and editing for WCP and Freya's Bower, it's not the highest priority. Besides which, the little one has a way of making things take twice as long. And her favorite two words "up" and "no" don't help either. LOL

Maintaining more than one blog

I have discovered that while I may edit an online magazine, I am not very verbose when it comes to my blogs or writing. Perhaps that's not such a bad trait. I mean, people don't care that much for others who tend to prattle on, but I would like to think that I have a lot to say. (Bahahahaha!) Not that I am incapable of babbling on, because I tend to do this more in person than when writing, but merely I find it difficult to do when I write.

Once in college, I had to write a term paper as a final for a class that had to be at least 10 pages long. I managed seven pages. No matter how much I tried to add to the paper, I couldn't justify adding words just for filler. So, I turned it in three pages short. Perhaps I would have earned an A instead of an A-. (shrug) Sometimes, there's no helping it.

Tonight, it seems I am capable of blathering on. I cannot say why, really, only postulate that
having my daughter cling to me for a good five hours today may have something to do with it. She has not been feeling well the past couple of days and eating very little beyond nursing. Finally, today, she ate a goodly amount of oatmeal for dinner. (Oatmeal for dinner? Suffice it to say she's a picky eater, and oatmeal sticks.) This is a good sign. Hopefully, this means that she is on the mend.

Our deadline for Freya's Bower is growing closer and closer. No matter how far away March seems, I know that if I do not start working in earnest on the design, the "opening" date will suddenly be tomorrow instead of nearly a month away. Michelle Ellis' husband is working on the graphics for it. Michelle has been hogging the computer, so I can only wait until he has a chance to use the computer. (I am teasing, Michelle. :-D)

All right, the rugrat is out of the bath. My alone time is done.

News at Wild Child

Wild Child Publishing.com is proud to announce the launch of its e-book section. After a couple of years of searching for the right shopping cart and the right web hosting company, we've finally done it. Come January 1st, we will offer e-books to buy. While you are certainly welcome to come and read our magazine, we encourage to also buy our e-books. :) Or, you can submit too. Please be sure to read our submission guidelines before submitting. One our biggest pet peeves as editors is to receive material not properly formatted. This tells us the author did not read our guidelines, and we are less likely to take the person seriously if she doesn't.

In other news, we will be launching our store in February as well as selling our back issues. As we have been online for over six years now, we have a lot of stories, articles, poetry, interviews, etc. We have the only interview of Cliff Morrison, Jim Morrison's son. That interview may be the only one ever to happen.

We will also be launching a subsidiary line of romantica e-books under a different name. As we are still working on the name, I will keep you posted of what happens with that.

I hope everyone has had a lovely holiday season so far. Often life can throw us chaff. It's up to us to decide whether we will transmute that chaff into gold or lead. Although there are many things in life we cannot control, we can control our thoughts and our reactions. It's not always easy, but we at least have that much we can do.

Man. I have gone insane... again. A lapse that seems to be happening more and more. LOL No time. I signed up to be able to respond to a post by a friend, but alas, I think I will stay. :) Maybe I'll make some friends here, huh? I hope so. :)
